God’s Mind is on You

“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.” (Psalm 8: 3-5, ESV)

Have you ever stood in front of nature and been completely in awe of the awesomeness of God?

For me, I was a teenager standing on the Maid of the Mist, a little boat that launches out of the New York side of Niagara Falls and sails into the horseshoe at the bottom of the falls. Standing at the bottom of this huge waterfall, water hurdling over the edge and crashing with such force into the river below that it ricochets into a hazy mist that drenches everything.

And at the bottom of that immense waterfall, with all the palpable speed and force it generates, I felt so small. And I was amazed at the great, big God that created that pulled that waterfall out of His mind, created it with His fingertips, and yet was still mindful of me– small, weak, and insignificant.

And yet still, though Niagara Falls is colossal, it is dwarfed by mountains, oceans, and other amazing things on this earth. It is miniscule when placed next to the moon and stars that also were built from His fingers. Even smaller when you think bigger in terms of galaxies, universes, heaven itself.

All of that was constructed by a God that holds it all in His hand. In terms of scale, you are nothing but an amoeba– completely unseen and unremarkable next to the wonder of creation. But God still sees you. He still loves you and is mindful of you. He still favors you and wants you.

If it wasn’t enough to be small and insignificant compared to the splendor of creation,  we are unworthy on top of that. We are gripped by our sin and incapable of saving ourselves from it. We don’t deserve His attention or His mindfulness, but we still receive it.

“Sorry, sickly man, a mass of mortalities, a map of miseries, a mixture or compound of dirt and sin...and yet God is mindful of him.” - John Trapp

Our weakness is our flesh. It should discount us from His glory and shut us out from His presence. The only hope we have is that God’s mind is always on us and He is always thinking of us. He created us in His image. He delights in us and draws us near. More than any of the other things He created, He desires us.

And how wonderful is that? The fact that there is a God that can create something as awe-inspiring as Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, the Caribbean Sea, and any other natural wonder dripping in all the beauty you can imagine. There is a God who speaks into existence planets and stars, comets and galaxies– the very mysteries of this universe– and to Him you are more precious and more carefully crafted.

How could we possibly not draw near to Him? How could we ever neglect to be mindful of Him? How dare we prioritize other people or things over a God who picks us out of all the things He’s created? How is it possible that we can’t find the time within our day to put our attention on Him? To be with Him?

Because ultimately, even David didn’t stop there with the mindfulness of God. He says who are we that God would care for us or have a personal connection with us? Who are we that He would spend His infinite time with us, if we only turn towards Him?

Putting our minds on Him will never stop there. Because when we think of His greatness, we are compelled to turn towards Him and meditate on Him. When we realize His magnificence, the least we can do is be with Him and fall in love with Him all the more.

The best investment of your time today is to spend even just a few moments beholding Him. Think about His greatness and your smallness. Think about His strength and your weakness. Think about His amazing creativity, and His love for you that included you in all the things He created. Think about His bravery to send His Son and face down death so that you could be glorified through Him.

He is thinking of you today. Turn to Him and be with Him.
